Ostfeld\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor of Pediatrics at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School – Rutgers University and Program Director of the SIDS Center of New Jersey\, which she helped establish in 1987. SUMMARY:Doctors and Nurses and Lawyers\, Oh My!
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Miller\, CNM\, JD\, returns for a full-day interactive session – “Doctors and Nurses and Lawyers\, Oh My!: Liability & Risk Management in Perinatal Care” –  on Thursday\, May 9. This in-person conference is an essential learning experience for obstetricians\, midwives\, obstetric inpatient nurses\, administrators\, residents\, and medical/ nursing students. Attendees will learn from actual perinatal malpractice cases and learn to identify the underlying contributing factors to errors. Attendees will obtain knowledge on medical and nursing documentation and its relationship with liability.  Registration is required. \nAbout Lisa A. Miller\, CNM\, JD: Founder of Perinatal Risk Management and Education Services\, Lisa is a certified nurse-midwife with over 40 years of experience in a wide variety of settings. Also an attorney\, her legal background gives her a unique understanding of the impact of law on medicine and nursing. Ms. Miller served as an Assistant Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University Medical School and is published in the areas of EFM\, obstetrics\, and patient safety. She spends most of her time teaching an evidence- and consensus-based standardized approach to fetal monitoring interpretation & management\, based on the NICHD nomenclature. \nCourse Objectives: After attending this program\, the learner will be able to: \n\nIdentify common liability issues in perinatal care\nReview typical allegations in perinatal malpractice litigation and describe appropriate risk reduction strategies\nDescribe and discuss the relationship between documentation and deposition\n\nTarget Audience: Obstetric Nurses\, Physicians\, Midwives \nDisclosure/Commercial Support: The planners do not have any conflicts of interest to report for this activity. SUMMARY:Virtual Webinar - HIV\, Hepatitis\, & Syphilis: Evolving Perinatal Clinical Care Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Participants will learn from an experienced clinician about evolving perinatal issues of HIV\, hepatitis\, and syphilis. Clinical management content will include maternal & infant screening recommendations\, prevention strategies\, diagnosis\, and current treatment options. Participants will learn about community-based care coordination strategies and resources that effectively engage families in comprehensive HIV\, hepatitis\, and syphilis services. \nSpeaker\nSusan Burrows-Clark\, RN\, MSN\, CNS-C\, AACRN\, has been the APN/Director at Southern N.J. Regional Pediatric & Family HIV Treatment Center since 1990. She is responsible for the administrative duties of the program\, funded by private\, state\, and federal resources. Susan oversees the provision of direct patient care and coordination of patient services using a multidisciplinary\, family-centered model in an ambulatory care setting. SUMMARY:Virtual Webinar - A Resurgence of Congenital Syphilis: Managing the Syphilis-Exposed Infant
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, there has been a concerning rise in the rates of congenital syphilis\, with a significant impact on newborn infants. Healthcare providers must be aware of the latest statistics related to congenital syphilis and the recommended outpatient follow-up recommendations for syphilis-exposed infants. Understanding these trends can help providers in effectively identifying and managing cases of congenital syphilis\, ultimately leading to better outcomes for these vulnerable infants. This webinar will provide an overview of congenital syphilis and explore missed opportunities for preventing congenital syphilis\, as well as infant follow-up needs. \nMargaret “Meg” Fisher\, MD\, FAAP\, Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist\, received her undergraduate education at Susquehanna University\, Selinsgrove\, PA\, and her medical degree from the University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine. She completed her Pediatric Residency and Fellowship Training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children\, Philadelphia. Dr. Fisher joined the NJ Department of Health as a Special Advisor to the Commissioner of Health in 2020 and served as the Acting Deputy Commissioner of Public Health Services from September 2022 to June 2023.
