Trauma-Informed Care in Birth for Patients and Providers

This one hour live virtual program will explore the critical concepts of trauma-informed care and their application in healthcare settings. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how trauma affects patients and providers and learn practical strategies to enhance patient care while safeguarding their own well-being. Considerations for an interdisciplinary care team will be provided. Participants will leave the training having a deeper understanding of trauma-informed care principles and their application in clinical practice.

Presenter: Kara Kushnir, LCSW, PMH-C, is the Founder and Clinical Director of A Work of Heart Counseling in Allendale & Oradell, NJ, and Chair of Postpartum Support International NJ. She has been practicing as a psychotherapist for over a decade and practices with survivors of trauma in the perinatal period, including birth trauma, NICU stays, infant loss, and stillbirth.

Target Audience: Perinatal nurses, counselors, social workers, and other support staff.

Continuing Nursing Education Contact Hours: This program has been awarded 1.0 contact hours. The Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Social Work Continuing Education: This course, Trauma-Informed Care in Birth for Patients & Providers, Approval #11182024-295, provided by A Work of Heart Counseling is approved for continuing education by the New Jersey Social Work Continuing Education Approval Collaborative, which is administered by NASWNJ. CE Approval Collaborative Approval Period: Monday, November 18, 2024 through August 31, 2026. New Jersey social workers will receive 1 Clinical CE credits for participating in this course.

Learning Outcome: At the conclusion of the program, the participants will be able to:
1.Demonstrate an understanding of trauma-informed care principles and their application in clinical practice.
2.Assess the impact of trauma on patients and providers and recognize potential signs of trauma.
3. Apply trauma-informed communication and care strategies in interdisciplinary healthcare settings.
