Program Specialist – Perinatal Addictions Prevention Specialist

LOCATION:  Newark, New Jersey

CLASSIFICATION:  Full-Time – 37.5 hours/week

ANNUAL SALARY:  $48K-$50K

JOB SUMMARY: The Perinatal Addictions Prevention Specialist will raise public awareness regarding perinatal substance use and its effects on children and their families across eight counties in northern New Jersey.  This will involve educating both consumers and professionals on topics such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), and other perinatal substance-related issues. Additionally, the coordinator will organize training utilizing the 4P’s Plus Screening tool of the Perinatal Risk Assessment (PRA) and offer technical support to perinatal care facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide consumer prevention education to individuals of reproductive age, emphasizing middle school through college-age individuals and pregnant and parenting individuals utilizing the Life Course Model.
  • Provide in-person and virtual presentations to professionals and assist with providing continuing education credits when required.
  • Evaluate educational workshops using an evaluation form and /or verbal feedback.
  • Utilize pre-and post-tests for educational programs whenever possible.
  • Participate in community events and health fairs to disseminate educational materials,and obtain information about related services.
  • Provide ongoing support and technical assistance to private and public prenatal care providers using the 4 P’s Plus section of the PRA when screening pregnant women on their first prenatal visit.
  • Participate in the PAPP Quality Improvement by identifying healthcare providers requiring assistance in the referral section of the 4 P’s Plus and implement a Plan, Do Study Act cycle to improve performance.
  • Identify community needs by participating in regional committee meetings.
  • Collaborate with staff to maintain/update the Regional Directory of Addiction Services for pregnant and non-pregnant individuals.
  • Provide educational brochures to prenatal care providers and in the community.
  • Act as a resource for prenatal care providers seeking treatment for pregnant individuals.
  • Collect data and promptly submit monthly reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social services, nursing, or related fields. Master’s preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish and English/Creole are preferred.
  • Licensure by the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs as a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC) or certification as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or Certification in Addiction (CARN) by the Addictions Nursing Certification Board, Certification as a Perinatal Addictions Specialist (CPAS) or (WTS) Women treatment certification.
  • Two years’ experience in maternal and child health and/or substance abuse prevention, intervention years, or treatment.
  • Experience organizing and conducting educational training and evaluations.
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work individually and as a team member.
  • Strong oral and written communication, along with good interpersonal skills.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office
